The Amazon Rainforest is the beating heart of the world and sprawls across the continent of South America, giving life to the highest concentration of biodiversity anywhere on the planet.
The department of Amazonas is situated at the southernmost point of Colombia and shares borders with Peru and Brazil.

A large number of indigenous tribes inhabit the Amazon’s rainforests and waterways, proudly revelling in their rich and varied cultures of harmony with the environment around them which they have practiced, uninterrupted for thousands of years. Visitors to their territories can enjoy living in traditional villages and learning their intricate customs and practices such as producing the most fabulously extravagant and colourful handicrafts and jewellery from the natural rainforest materials around them.

The biggest draw for tourists to the region is to appreciate the immensity of the place while at the same time realising your personal insignificance in the endless sea of green and blue and of course to admire the wide array of unique wildlife that call the Amazon their home.

Take canoe trips along Amazon tributaries and marvel at macaws gliding across the sky, small primates leaping from tree to tree and let your mouth fall open as Amazonian Pink River Dolphins surface to admire who has come to see them. On land, a more stealthy approach will reward with sightings of jaguar, boa and tapir.
Very soon, the Colombian Amazon has awakened a link to our ancestors deep inside and a realisation that Mother Nature is still in control.

Climate: Hot/Humid
Temperature: Average 28 degrees centigrade

Year-round, the climate in Amazonas is hot and extremely humid which leads to almost daily rains as a result of waters from the Amazon and its tributaries being evaporated, condensed and falling again to feed the cycle of life of the thousands of plant and animal species that exist there.
Sun-protection is essential as is insect repellent.

The many indigenous tribes of the Colombian Amazon are scattered across the department and only rarely come into contact with each other in some areas of river trading and markets between the tribes. As a result of this, each individual tribal group has developed its own unique culture which makes visiting Amazonas a real delight of discovery, learning different ways of life and beliefs about aspects that we take very much for granted.

The Amazon region of Colombia is so immense and unexplored that there is no doubt there remain tribes that are yet to be discovered and are yet to have contact with western people. In the same way, it is expected that in the depths of the rainforest lie vestiges of ancient cultures that have long since died out. Exploring the Colombian Amazon over the years will become an exciting and interesting time.
