Beautiful, imposing Spanish-colonial architecture, manifested in 16th century cathedrals, convents and picturesque towns are plentiful in the department of Boyacá. Religious tourism is a major attraction of Boyacá with pilgrims making regular visits to the various colonial towns where large, cobbled plazas, historic accommodations and the warm disposition of the locals leads to the pleasant feeling of spiritual well-being.
For the more adventurous visitor, Boyacá possesses a wealth of natural attractions such as lakes, rivers, thermal hot-springs and páramos to be explored. Snow-capped peaks adorn the length of the Eastern Mountain Range of the Colombia Andes where Boyacá is situated and the Cocuy National Natural Park is the perfect place in which to enjoy high-mountain eco-systems and adventurous pursuits.

The vestiges of the ancient Muisca and Chibcha tribes which inhabited Boyacá prior to the Spanish colonisation in the 1500s can still be admired in all their glory in various guises including; cave-paintings, burial sites and carved stone-figures.
Boyacá’s relaxed atmosphere makes you believe again in the contentment of times gone by.

Climate: Cool
Temperature: Average 13 degrees centigrade

From Boyacá’s position in the Eastern Andean Mountain Range, the climate is cool and fresh, although temperatures can reach up to 22°C in some regions such as Puerto Boyacá and the Magdalena River valleys.

The culture of Boyacá is based deeply in a historic and religious past which is reflected in its many mansions, monasteries and churches which were built between the 15th and the 18th centuries and remain as a breathtaking example of the architectural achievements of the time.
The people of Boyacá are very traditional and proud of their history which also includes the Bridge of Boyacá where the battle for the Independence of Colombia was fought and won against the Spanish crown.

El Cocuy National Natural Park   This National Park is made up of wonderful snow-covered peaks and the pristine lakes that reflect them. This is a true gem for hikers and climbers to explore.
Villa de Leyva   This small, picture-perfect Spanish-colonial town is regarded by many Colombians as the most beautiful in the country for its quaint cobbled streets and historic architecture. Other attractions that make Villa de Leyva a truly magical place are the desert that lies just outside the town where fossils of huge dinosaurs have been discovered and the surrounding landscapes which are breathtaking to say the least.
Iguaque Sanctuary of Fauna & Flora   Managed by the National Parks of Colombia, this sanctuary is home to many unique species of Andean plants and animals, due to the páramo and forest that covers the land. Iguaque is also the lands in which the ancient tribe, the Muiscas used to live and many archaeological surprises can be discovered while exploring the park.
Thermal Hot-Springs   The thermal springs that are enriched from the volcanic activity beneath the earth are a huge attraction of Boyacá and the Alexander Von Humboldt Institute declared the springs the healthiest in the world for the medicinal value of its mud. It is well worth a visit and taking a couple of hours to completely relax and allow mother-nature to heal your body is a must.
