Beautiful, imposing
Spanish-colonial architecture, manifested in 16th century
cathedrals, convents and picturesque towns are plentiful in
the department of Boyacá. Religious tourism is a major
attraction of Boyacá with pilgrims making regular visits to
the various colonial towns where large, cobbled plazas,
historic accommodations and the warm disposition of the locals
leads to the pleasant feeling of spiritual well-being.
For the more adventurous visitor, Boyacá possesses a wealth of
natural attractions such as lakes, rivers, thermal hot-springs
and páramos to be explored. Snow-capped peaks adorn the length
of the Eastern Mountain Range of the Colombia Andes where
Boyacá is situated and the Cocuy National Natural Park is the
perfect place in which to enjoy high-mountain eco-systems and
adventurous pursuits.
The vestiges of the ancient Muisca and Chibcha tribes which
inhabited Boyacá prior to the Spanish colonisation in the
1500s can still be admired in all their glory in various
guises including; cave-paintings, burial sites and carved
stone-figures.
Boyacá’s relaxed atmosphere makes you believe again in the
contentment of times gone by.
