Hypnotic salsa-rhythms fill the deliciously-warm evening air of Santiago de Cali every night of the week. Citizens of this vibrant, fun-loving city have salsa, dance and red-hot passion running through their veins.

Cali is the departmental capital of Valle del Cauca but is also the international capital of salsa music and breeds the world’s most inspirational salsa dancers and musicians. The city was founded in 1534 by Sebastián Belalcázar who chose the land which is now Valle del Cauca for its incredibly fertile soils in the west of Colombia that reaches as far as the Pacific Coast. In the lush, green countryside around Cali is a rich and interesting agricultural history which to this day produces huge quantities of primarily sugar-cane and other crops such as wine and pineapple.
Cali enjoys an extremely traditional gastronomic identity and a trip the city is not complete without visiting one of its many restaurants to sample the famous “Sancocho de Gallina” (a type of chicken stew) in one of its chic hospitality districts where enchanted visitors can eat, drink and relax to the fullest, all in one place.

Cali and its surroundings have much to offer everyone from families to individual travellers. Explore it for yourself and take away your own magical memories of the “City of Salsa”.

Climate: Hot/Humid
Temperature: Average 26 degrees centigrade

The climate throughout the department of Valle del Cauca is hot and humid. In the city of Cali, the humidity is a little lower than in the surrounding countryside and national parks where the thick vegetation increases the humidity.
At the coast, a welcome sea breeze decreases significantly the humidity level but the high heat is still present and for this, sufficient fluid must be drunk to combat dehydration.

Before the arrival of the Spanish colonisers to the Americas, Valle del Cauca was inhabited by various groups of indigenous tribes who lived harmoniously with mother-nature. These peoples included; the Calima, Ilama and Yotoco. Intricate sculptures and other crafts are exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Calima.
Along the coast are settlements of Afro-Colombian people who were brought to Colombia by Spanish during the abhorrent slave trade. The people are now expert fishermen and welcome visitors to arrive in their villages and admire their culture which has changed very little from the times of their ancestors in Africa.
Inland, the culture of the farmers and city-dwellers is descended from that of European settlers and specific to Cali is the salsa soul that lives inside its locals that inspires the need to sing, dance and have a great time.
The food of Cali is very specific to that region and includes dishes such as the “Sancocho de Gallina” (a type of chicken stew) and the Tortilla Soup.

Los Farallones de Cali National Natural Park   This national park lies between Cali and Buenaventura on the Pacific Coast.
Declared as a national park in 1968, many surprising and beautiful species reside here.
Las Hermosas National Natural Park   Las Hermosas National Park is located across the border between Valle del Cauca the department of Tolima on the Central Mountain Range of the Colombian Andes.
The park is made up of ghostly Andean cloud-forests and páramo and is home to a range of unique plants and animals such as the Wax Palm (the tallest palm-tree in the world) and the Spectacled Bear.
Cali Zoo   The Zoo is a perfect excursion for the whole family and this example is considered one of the best in South America. The tour lasts roughly two hours and once an appetite has been worked up, it can be satisfied in the zoo’s restaurant: The Yagé.
Buenaventura   This city lies on the Pacific coast of Colombia and is the largest and busiest sea-port in the country. However, to take oneself away from the port is to explore a tropical world of wonders, where the jungles spill down complete with playful waterfalls onto the Pacific
beaches and finally into the sea.
Every year between July and September, various species of whale arrive in the nutrient-rich waters of the Colombian Pacific to breed and spawn. This spectacle of breaching and singing whales can be witnessed from the white sands of the beaches of Buenaventura. Breathtaking!
Isla de Malpelo Sanctuary of Flora & Fauna   This island appears to be a large rock that emerges from the Pacific Ocean, 30 hours by boat from Buenaventura. The secrets that it possesses however are well worth the journey for these waters are nutritionally some of the richest in the world, attracting whales, sharks, manta rays, turtles, fishes and the king of these waters; the majestic whale-shark.
This island is a diver’s paradise to swim with such a large quantity of amazing species. Visitors can not disembark from the boat and make contact with the island itself and only qualified divers are permitted to dive in these waters.
