The “Heroic” Cartagena is
without doubt one of the finest examples of a coastal
walled-city from the era of the Spanish conquistadors anywhere
in the world. Breathtaking architecture and a richly romantic
history blend seamlessly with lush Caribbean scenery and the
most welcoming of atmospheres. Cartagena’s many golden-sanded
beaches attract tourists from around the world and the warmth
of its coastal waters is always a firm favourite.
Founded in 1533 by the Spanish conquistador, Don Pedro de
Heredia, Cartagena developed into one of the most impressively
defended “New World” cities in the Spanish crown. The fortress
and walled city defended this paradise from attacks by English
pirates and buccaneers. In modern times, Cartagena has been
named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its cultural
importance to humanity.
The ancient walled-city lies between Rafael Núñez
International Airport and the contemporary, fashionable
residential district which incorporates El Castillo Grande, El
Laguito and Bocagrande.
For dive-enthusiasts and island-hoppers alike, one of the
oldest ports in Latin America hosts the thousands of
speedboats and cruise ships which meander and marvel at the
ecological wonder that is the Caribbean island-archipelago of
Rosario and San Bernardo.
