Biogeographically, the department of Chocó is in the top 10 sites in the world for biodiversity and displays a vast array of endemic plant and animal species. Virgin, tropical rainforests and miles upon miles of deserted white-sanded beaches make Chocó a truly magnificent eco-paradise for tranquillity and the appreciation of breathtaking nature at its most awe-inspiring. Chocó is the only department in Colombia to have a coastline in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean as well as sharing a border with Panama.

Bahía Solano, Nuquí, Quibdó & Tutunendo and Capurganá & Sapzurro make up the “4 Magical Destinations” that were declared as such by the Colombian Ministry of Industry and Tourism. In amongst these awesome locations are also three national parks including Los Katíos, Utria and Tatamá which are all intensively monitored and protected due to the fragility and endemic nature of their eco-systems.

Between July and November, the humpback whales arrive in Chocó’s warm, tranquil waters to breed and give birth to their young. The spectacle is an annual event and wows all who witness the breaching males, competing for a mate, mothers and young frolicking in the crystal waters and the ever present playful dolphins who like to welcome the arrival of these majestic giants with a display of their own agility. If a boat trip to view the whales is not to your taste, a comfortable hammock on the beach is a sufficient vantage-point from which to enjoy the scene unfolding.

A secret delicacy which is not common knowledge but which Another World highly recommends during this time is to enter the shallows from the beach, lie on ones back, floating on the waves with ears below the water line and the songs of the whales will echo out to caress your soul as the males serenade the females offshore. Unmissable!

Climate: Hot/Humid
Temperature: Average 28 degrees centigrade

Chocó is a very tropical, humid department and as such has a high precipitation percentage and clothing suitable for rain should be packed for such instances. The heat along the Pacific Coast is always high but not too humid due to the gentle sea-breeze. However, when exploring the rainforest, the humidity is extremely high and fresh water should be drank regularly to sustain corporal hydration.

Citizens of Chocó are Afro-Colombian in origin and they live harmoniously with the various indigenous tribes that inhabit the territory. African rhythms and the ability to move the body, sing and play various instruments are inherent in the blood of the locals of each village and town.

The gastronomy of Chocó is based strongly on sea food and the freshest of fish and mollusc-dishes can be enjoyed in one of Chocó’s many settlements.

Los Katíos National Natural Park   Declared a World Heritage Site in 1994 by UNESCO for its exceptional level of biodiversity and endemic species, Los Katíos is situated on the border with Panama.
The park is made up of humid rainforest, rivers and waterfalls, one of which amazes at 100 metres in height.
Capurganá   This is the one most popular tourist destination in the country for its many fun activities and natural attractions such as jungle, coral-reefs and islands. Situated on the Atlantic coast of Chocó, Capurganá is perfect for nature lovers to enjoy eco-walks and view a plethora of tropical species while dive-enthusiasts can explore brightly-coloured reefs in crystalline waters.
Utria National Natural Park   The park lies between Bahía Solano and Nuquí on the Pacific Coast of Colombia and is one of the most important national parks in the country due to its marine and terrestrial flora and fauna. Throughout the whole year, visitors can appreciate leaping dolphins and majestic sea-turtles but between July and November, the humpback whales arrive and attract admirers from across Colombia.
Nuquí   A small settlement of afro-descendants live in the small town of Nuquí and welcome all visitors with open arms. The township is on the Pacific Coast of the department and offers visitors a wide array of exciting and interesting attractions including waterfalls, thermal springs with curative properties and water-based activities such as scuba-diving, speedboat tours and surfing.
Bahía Solano   One of the most visited destinations in Chocó, Baha Solano promises and delivers so much to the privileged visitor. Lying on the Pacific Coast, Bahía Solano possesses many sprawling bays of white sand, rocks and colourful pebbles as well as waterfalls directly into the sea and a marine-turtle sanctuary and conservation project which is a must to visit.
