A huge, open expanse of rust-coloured, sun-baked rock-formations greets privileged visitors to the Tatacoa Desert and strange cacti and other alien plants induce the feeling of a landscape from another planet. The department of Huila is full to the brim of diverse surprises awaiting discovery from the archaeological to the palaeontological to the ecological.

Huila is situated in the south-western corner of Colombia in the territory of one of the grandest and most sophisticated ancient civilisations to have lived on the American continents, the Ullumbe people who inhabited this region between the 1st and 8th centuries. In San Agustín lies the San Agustín Archaeological Park which is comprised of a breathtaking landscape of lush, green vegetation and open pastures which are dotted by huge standing-stone figures and statues which is the largest group of stone monuments to be found anywhere in South America and is recognised as such by UNESCO. However, Huila’s history reaches even further back in time to an era when dinosaurs ruled the earth and the small town of Villavieja is Colombia’s capital of palaeontology due to the quality and quantity of fossils that have been discovered there.

To put the icing on your journey of exploration and adventure in Huila, the rivers, caves and of course the great Nevado del Huila volcano are all at your disposal to enjoy more adrenaline-filled adventures.
Huila has the history of planet earth to discover.

Climate: Cold – Hot (dependant on location)
Temperature: 2 - 29°C (dependant on location)

Atop the peak of the Nevado del Huila volcano is a cap of perpetual snow where the temperatures are sub-zero at times but as one travels down the mountain and into the lowlands, the temperature increases and is at its highest in the Tatacoa Desert where daytime temperatures can reach more than 30°C.
It is advised to take clothes to suit both climates depending on the activities in which you will participate.

The long-gone Ullumbe civilisation that once controlled the lands of Huila have left an indelible mark on the landscape with their outstanding stone craftsmanship of monuments and this has also left a stunning cultural identity for the current citizens of the region who are proud to have such a rich history.

The culture of the inhabitants of the towns and the capital city of Neiva is nowadays very much descended from the Spanish-colonial days and this is reflected in the extravagant architecture of their churches and other religious buildings.

The most famous cultural heritage of Huila is its music and the “Bambuco” dance which is engrained in the spirit of every citizen of Huila.

The Tatacoa Desert   This arid desert appears to glow orange due to the soil’s high iron content. Rather than the usual sand-based desert, the Tatacoa is sandstone that is baked hard and has been eroded over the millennia to form stacks of wrinkled stone which is a sight to behold.
It is possible to camp in the desert and view the alien-looking flora and fauna of the area and for the astronomy enthusiasts, the stars at night appear close enough to touch due to the desert’s location directly on the equator.
San Agustín Archaeological Park   As far as the eye can see are green pastures which are covered in large stone figures of religious deities which were important to the powerful Ullumbe people. Across the park, admire the skilled stone-work of the ancient peoples along with tombs and elaborate sarcophagi.
Adventure Sports   Huila offers a plethora of adrenaline-sports and adventurous pursuits which take full advantage of the region’s beautiful landscape including; rafting on the Magdalena River, parasailing from the cliffs of the Nevado del Huila volcano, caving some amazing cave-systems and horse-riding across deserts, rivers and lush hill-sides.
Neiva   The capital city of the department of Huila is an enticingly warm, sunny place to visit with a wealth of culture and history to envelope the tourist. Neiva’s folkloric festivals and extremely welcoming people, makes it a pleasure to visit and perfect to relax in.
Nevado del Huila National Natural Park   This volcano has perpetual snows at its peak and is an amazing mountain to trek for lovers of high-mountain scenery and photographic opportunities. Be sure to bring cold-weather clothing.
Cueva de los Guácheros National Natural Park   The name means “the cave of the Guácheros”. This deep cave is must for admirers of unique eco-systems for within the cave is a roost of hundreds of bats but also a very unique nocturnal bird; the “Guachero” which has evolved to have a form of echo-location or sonar similar to that of the bats which enables it to hunt for food in total darkness. Scientists are only now beginning to understand this marvellous bird.
