The Alta Guajira is the northernmost point of South America and is a truly mystical place where the golden sands of the desert peninsula are framed by aquamarine Caribbean waters. The land is inhabited by the “Wayuú” indigenous people who are made durable by the hot desert winds but remain a magical fixture of the Guajira region.

Delicious contrasts epitomise this beautiful land. Although dominated by baked sand dunes, small, lush oases attract large concentrations of plant and animal life. La Macuira National Park is made up of a large oasis which is amazingly set in the middle of the desert where the high mist-forests drink water directly from the clouds. Visitors to the region can expect a wide choice of attractions to visit and activities to partake in. The largest open-cast coal mine in the world can be found a short journey from the amazing bright-white salt-flats of Manaure where salt is mined but also where wild pink flamingos live and breed.

Riohacha is the capital city of the department of La Guajira and here, visitors can relax in comfortable hotels and enjoy the mouth-watering sea-food of the region.

Climate: Hot/Dry
Temperature: Average 22 - 30 degrees centigrade

The climate of the Guajira peninsula is extremely dry and hot and during the evenings can occasionally be cold. A refreshing breeze can very often be felt blowing in from the Caribbean Sea and the various oases that are dotted across the landscape turn the atmosphere in close proximity to them to a more humid, tropical climate.

The Guajira department is inhabited almost exclusively by the Wayuú indigenous people who have lived and prospered on this land for millennia.

The Wayuú people have their own laws and control their land in accordance with their beliefs which have been passed from generation to generation. Visitors to the Guajira can expect to be amazed by traditional dances, tribal villages and handicrafts made by the Wayuú.

May: Culture of the Wayuú Festival (Uribia).

Queen of Salt National Contest.
June/July: Queen of Dividivi National Contest.
October: The festival of Return and Plantain.

Manaure   In Manaure are the salt-plains where the Wayuú people have been mining salt for centuries.
Now, the harvest of sea salt is performed on an industrial scale and the plains themselves are a huge tourist-draw.
Cabo de la Vela   Cabo de la Vela has long stretches of beach which mix with the desert and arrive at the Caribbean waters. Visitors to this beautiful location can also revel in the experience of sleeping in hammocks beneath extremely bright starlit nights.
La Macuira National Park   La Macuira is an oasis set in the middle of the desert which is protected as a National Park for its unique eco-system which includes primates and large feline species.
Cerrejón   Cerrejón is the largest open-cast coalmine in the world and as such is a major tourist attraction.
The tour of the site includes videos about the extraction of carbon and about the life of Cerrejón as well as a trip to a view-point where the huge machinery can be seen working while looking like children’s toys.
The Flora and Fauna Sanctuary Los Flamencos   This amazing national park lies along the coastline of La Guajira and is the place to visit the extensive flocks of wild pink flamingos that thrive in its saline waters.
