Colombia is internationally renowned for the deep, rich, aromatic coffee which it produces. But behind the product is an even richer history and culture that emanates from every corner of Colombia’s breathtaking coffee region. Manizales is the capital city of Caldas which along with the departments of Risaralda and Quindío makes up the coffee zone. Today, Caldas balances its coffee-growing traditions with a flourishing tourism industry.

It is the same natural situation that is so perfect for growing coffee that promotes visitors to arrive and be amazed by resorts built on natural, thermal hot-springs in which guests can relax and soothe their bodies, vast snow-covered mountain peaks to explore and a unique eco-system to admire which supports the mighty Andean Condor. In addition to the emerald-green rolling hills and deep-blue waters of the area’s lakes, Manizales provides the visitor with a chance to discover the inner city’s attractions including the 20,000 capacity Bull Coliseum, the Pre-Colombian Museum and the Cathedral of Manizales which all display the elegant, awe-inspiring architecture that is typical of the region.

Climate: Warm/Humid
Temperature: Average 18 degrees centigrade

The average temperature in Manizales is a very agreeable 18°C but clothing for cooler weather is recommended. Due to the warm air condensing high up in the Los Nevados National Park, rain and mist is common in this region. As one moves higher up in altitude, the temperatures decrease and cold weather clothing is necessary as there is perpetual snow atop the peaks of the mountains.

The Rio Magdalena river valley and a location called La Dorada provides Caldas with the only place low enough in altitude to produce high temperatures which rise to the low 30s degrees centigrade.

The culture of Manizales is descended from the coffee farmers which have lived in the area for hundreds of years. A hard-working people, visitors to the city will also be privileged to see that those who work hard also like to let their hair down as much as possible.

A proud farming culture and a distinctive architecture to the region is what makes Manizales so culturally rich and such a delight to visit.
