Amazing Colombia

This culture-soaked department is situated in the enchanting lands of the Eastern Plains of Colombia; a flat savannah-grassland, dotted with exotic trees, rivers and water-holes which is kissed every morning by one of the most spectacular sunrises to be found anywhere in the world.

Lying on the equator and bathed daily in tropical heat, the proud cow-folk farming culture of the plains goes about its daily work and provides Colombia with the most mouth-watering of beef-based gastronomy. The flora and fauna of Colombia’s plains also benefit from the favourable climate, thriving in and around the many pools and river-systems. Some of the amazing wildlife to be admired throughout the plains are: caiman, macaws, anacondas, capybaras and amazingly in the nearby Meta River, pink river-dolphins which are commonplace in this magical region. Becoming involved in the horse-riding culture of the plains is a must for visitors. Horse-trekking across the savannah combined with other exhilarating pursuits such as rafting and parasailing adds to the affinity that all who experiences this land can’t help but feel.

Climate: Humid Tropical
Temperature: Average 17 - 31 degrees centigrade
Dry Season: December - March
Wet Season: March - November

Much of the department of Meta is extremely warm due to its location on the equator. The landscape is open savannah with sparse vegetation to offer cover from the sun’s strong rays. It is for this reason that sombreros are a popular item of clothing for locals in this region.

During the wet-season, some dry plains are transformed into shimmering flood-plains when the Meta River burst its banks and gives relief to the parched earth.

Always wear light clothing and carry sufficient water and sun-protection for excursions or treks.

Meta’s culture is based firmly in the legend and majesty of the life of the cowboy rancher, complete with his sombrero to shield him from the midday-sun’s rays. Citizens of the plains are extremely hard-working, driving their livestock across the savannah on horse-back to refresh them at one of the many wildlife-rich watering-holes.

As a result of the main occupation of people in this region being livestock-farming, the most delicious meat-dishes can be detected in the air much of the time. The beef and other meats are usually cooked in a very traditional way over an open grill of hot rocks or on a metal cone-shaped frame over a fire. For food-lovers, the gastronomy of the plains has to be tried and will never be forgotten.

Sierra de la Macarena   This National Park is one of the most important in the world due to its unique eco-system in which exists thousands of species of plants and animals. The landscape of the Macarena is breathtaking in every aspect, comprising of lush jungles and rivers, the most amazing river being Caño Cristales that is crystal clear with fluorescent-coloured weeds that create a rainbow that cascades down the mountain before your eyes. This must be seen to be believed.
Trekking across the savannah   Taking long walks or horse-treks across the savannah is the perfect way to observe the wild flora & fauna that inhabits the wide open spaces.
Sunrises & sunsets across the savannah   To watch the sun rise or set across the plains is an awe-inspiring experience as there are no mountains or hills to obstruct the emerging or disappearing sun. This magically creates the effect that with the first sign of the sun in the morning, its rays shoot out across the shadowed land, as if reaching for the life that inhabits it.
Villavicencio   The capital city of Meta has so much to offer the tourist from beautifully crafted parks and monuments to a wide variety of restaurants in which to sample the best food that the Colombian plains have to offer.
