The department of North Santander runs along the north-eastern border with Venezuela, along the Eastern Mountain Range of the Colombian Andes. Cúcuta, the department’s capital city has a rich historical past from the Spanish colonisation of Colombia to the first Constituent Congress which was held in Villa del Rosario in 1821 of Gran Colombia (before Colombia became the size and shape it is today, it was named Gran Colombia and was made up of the countries which are today known as Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela and of course, Colombia).

North Santander is very privileged to possess three outstandingly rich National Parks; the Catatumbo National Natural Park which is located in the extreme north of the department, The Unique Natural Area Los Estoraques in the centre of the department and the Tama National Natural Park in the south which overlaps the border and also forms a National Park in Venezuela.

North Santander’s mix of historical architecture and plethora of natural zones, perfect for breathtaking eco-tours makes it a gem amongst the northern Andes.

Climate: Variable dependant on altitude
Temperature: 3 - 30 degrees centigrade (dependant on altitude of location)

The weather of North Santander varies greatly depending on the location that you may be visiting. The low valleys of Catatumbo and Zulia enjoy a tropical, humid climate with temperatures around 30°C but in comparison, a visit to one of North Santander’s many high-páramos brings temperatures that rarely reach above 3°C.

Taking into consideration the variable climate of this department, it is a recommendation that tourists should always bring clothing, adequate to the climate, based on prior climatic advice of the proposed region to be visited.

North Santander’s principal attractions are its areas of outstanding natural beauty and National Parks. However, the department’s culture is rich in history and substance.

A visit to North Santander is never complete without visiting one of its many small townships that are scattered across the territory, many of which have great national importance for the part they have played in the growth of Colombia as an independent nation. The beautiful Spanish-colonial architecture is a delight to behold.

Unique Natural Area Los Estoraques   A visit to this National Park breeds the feeling of being in a land of giants due to the huge pillars and stacks of stone that shoot up into the sky across the park. The rock-formations are due to thousands of years of wind and water erosion.
Tama National
Natural Park
48,000 hectares of invaluable floral and faunal life makes up this park administered by the National Parks of Colombia and stretches across the border with Venezuela. The diverse landscape of the park makes for an extremely exciting visit including high-mountain, páramo, forest, jungle and large river-systems.
Cúcuta   Cúcuta is the capital city of the department of North Santander and lies on the border with Venezuela.
Tourists are always impressed by its religious architecture which has been influenced by pieces that were brought to the city from France during the colonisation era.
